Crash-landing in Sevastopol circa 1855, the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) discovered the British army fighting not the Russians but an alien army of Sontarans. It makes you wonder what Chibnall might have achieved if he hadn’t been struggling with self-contained episodic adventures for the past four years.
His writing seems suited to such a series-long story arc, with each episode ending on a tantalising cliffhanger. David Tennant and his assistant investigating a mystery amid an unfamiliar landscape and a cast of character actors? It was essentially a dry run for this iteration of Doctor Who. Chibnall’s breakthrough creation, of course, was Broadchurch. This episode, titled War of the Sontarans, was one of Chibnall’s best yet - a giddy adventure which combined the past with the future, serious sci-fi with silliness and the requisite amount of scares. Have we discovered writer Chris Chibnall’s strength too late? The Doctor Who (BBC One) showrunner is finally hitting his stride, just as he enters the home stretch.
